Superheroes Don’t Tend To Stay Dead, But Their Deaths Have Lasting Impact
Superhero deaths don’t often last very long, with our favorite heroes finding a way to crawl their way back into existence through science, magic or …slight of hand. From the death of Superman at the hands of Doomsday in the early 1990s through last years’ death of Wolverine, killing off popular superheroes makes for dramatic storytelling and gives the writers the ability to explore the meaning of that particular hero in new ways.
The death of Spider-Man in 2012, leading to Doctor Octopus’ brain in Peter Parker’s body is an excellent example. Writer Dan Slott was able to explore the meaning of being a hero and whether the superior intellect of a super-villain in the body of a super hero could actually lead to a superior version of that hero. The comics have a way of resolving, usually with the resurrection of the dead hero.
