Superman Plays a Major Role in Sueprgirl’s Life in the Comics

With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice less than a year away, the Man of Steel is in the spotlight of the DC Universe and tonight’s premiere of Supergirl has us wondering just how much of Superman will we actually get to see in Supergirl?

If the (recently leaked) pilot for CBS’ upcoming Supergirl is to be believed, we do get a glimpse of the hero,  Though it was very much one of the largely obscured, heavily back-lit variety (see picture above).

Could that be set to change through the course of the series, though?

Maybe. But from the sounds of the show’s executive producer Ali Adler, it might not be all that likely:

“Our prototype is the way the president is seen on Veep…It’s certainly [inspired by] so much of what Julia-Louis Dreyfus’ character goes through. Ultimately, this is a show about Supergirl and we really want to see it through her lens.”

Or, in other words:

We Aren’t Going to Be Seeing Superman Any Time Soon

Y’see, that ‘way of seeing the president on Veep’ that Adler referred to?

That basically means ‘not seeing him’ – since Veep has long made a (hilarious and effective) point of never actually showing the president at all. Instead, the show tends to cunningly duck the issue, going so far as to not even fully name the character.

And, while it’s pretty obvious that we’re going to be hearing a whole lot of direct references to Superman within Supergirl, Adler’s Veep comparison very much suggests that we aren’t going to actually be seeing the big guy alongside them.

But Is That a Good Thing or a Bad Thing?

Well, that really depends on your point of view – and on how well the show’s creative team could pull off and on-screen portrayal of Superman, assuming they will cast a different actor than the Cinematic DCU.

On the one hand, it’s obviously a shame that Superman – a huge part of Supergirl’s back-story and comic-book heritage – won’t be directly involved in the events of the series. After all, he’s a true A-Lister, and their presence on the small screen is always a welcome bonus (especially for ratings).

On the other hand, though, Adler may well be right about the advantages that come with Superman’s absence – with it allowing us to see the show “through [Supergirl’s] lens,” and thus improving the show itself. After all, we’ve already seen Smallville and Man of Steel, and this is Supergirl’s time to shine – which, as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has proven, is tricky when the audience is constantly waiting for an ‘A-List’ hero to show up.

Ultimately, then, perhaps only time will tell.  In the meantime, we’re excited about the new Supergirl show and want to see the title character shine.

What are your thoughts? Will Superman’s absence from Supergirl be a good thing, or not?
